The role of laser cutting machine using auxiliary gas is mainly as follows:
1) Most of them use air, or oxygen, and nitrogen. The first purpose is to blow away the residual slag to achieve the best cutting effect.
2) While using the gas to chase away the metal slag, protect the lens and prevent the slag from sticking to the lens, affecting the cutting quality.
3) Using nitrogen cutting, it can effectively achieve the effect of smooth and clean cutting surface, no burr and no dross.
4) Using oxygen cutting, oxygen can support combustion and react with materials to increase cutting speed.

There are quite a few advantages to laser cutters vs other processes.(I do feasibility studies for potential clients full time for a laser cutting machine builder, so I'll try to explain without sounding biased) Typically, the alternative for a laser cutting process is a blanking press or a turret punch. A blanking press has a special cutting tool for each shape. A turret punch has a number of small tools and punches out a part by cutting a limited number of hole sizes and some line shaped blades for the outer edges.  A laser cutter traces the outline of a part with the laser melting the metal, and an assist gas blasting the molten metal out of the cut.
